frontpage350road Weekly Update
Greetings Riders,
Well, it is Summer, and depending on where we go, we will experience all different types of heat. After living in Arizona and experiencing “Dry Heat” for the last 32 years, I kind of forget how miserable humidity can be. Mrs. C. and I flew back home to Lansing, Kansas last Friday for for Father’s Day and a mini family reunion with my Sister, my Dad and Tammy’s parents. As soon as I opened the door on the plane, I had a 32 year flashback of how muggy the Summer’s can be there. Within about 5 minutes my shirt was already wet with perspiration that would be with me the rest of the day. At least with the heat in Arizona, we know it is hot, and it is going to be hot. The hotter it gets, we just crank the air up one more notch to be comfortable. It seems hard to ever escape the humidity to get comfortable for some reason. Not to mention how hard it can be to breathe when it gets really bad. After this little reminder, I guess being a desert rat is not so bad after all.
I always knew there wasn’t much in Western Kansas but flat land, but after seeing it low level from the air, it rivals the desert for being desolate, that is for sure. One social nugget that I came away with after seeing miles of flat farmland is that wherever you see a grain elevator, you will see a small town. If you see a small cluster of trees in the distance, you can pretty much count on there being a grain elevator on the edge. My revelation from this trip is that there can be a town without an elevator, but rarely an elevator without a town. Hey, you have to think about something when seeing thousands of acres of green circles and dirt.
I did take some pictures from the air. They are not real exciting, but it shows where a lot of our food and grain comes from as well as a few cool shots from the air. For those of you that might have been there, you will also see some pictures of Ft. Leavenworth located on the bank of the Missouri River, which is where we landed.
One thing that strikes you after seeing this farming area from the air is the thousands of green circles. It is an interesting and unique look of landscape for sure. If you have ever wondered about that, the reason the green circles are there is that circular irrigation is the easiest and most efficient way to water the crops. All you have to do is run one source of water to the middle of the circle, then circulate a watering device around a pole in the middle of the field to water the crops. Hence, the green circles everywhere. Click Here for photos. Click Slideshow in upper right for best viewing.
There was one event that made me feel good and think of Arizona. While we were driving down the Main St. between Lansing and Leavenworth coming back from the airport, we saw a bunch of people parked on the side of the road and out of their cars lining the street holding flags looking to the South. There were young and old alike anticipating something to be coming by. I asked my Father in-law if they were having a parade or something today and he said that they were all waiting for the Patriot Guard Riders to be leading a funeral procession from Kansas City to the National Cemetery at Ft. Leavenworth for a Soldier that was recently KIA in Afghanistan. We pulled over to watch it go by. Sure enough, about 200 motorcycles with flags flying came roaring up Hwy. 73 leading the hearse and the cars. It was an awesome sight as always. Boy was I proud of the PGR in Kansas and proud to be a motorcycle rider. Go PGR!! See photos.
This week at the Westgate Bike Night we will have Live Music with “Sour Diesel Train Wreck” playing their crowd favorite blend southern rock. We will also have a large traveling interactive display of the new Yamaha “Bolt” motorcycle for you to see and participate in. Classic cars will be on display in center court. Should be a good time. Presented by Arrowhead HD and Ridenow Powersports.
To close out the season next week, June 27th will be “Rat Rod” night with the Live Music from “Chad Freeman and Redline”.

**Emissions testing for motorcycles update. After June 21st. No more emission testing for motorcycles. The following was taken from the ADEQ Website.
Update: This question has been asked a lot. What if my registration is due now, can I wait till June 21 and not have to have emissions testing? This is from a reader. “Even though my registration is due now, I was told by both MVD and Vehicle Emissions that if I wait until after June 21, I will not need to have my motorcycle tested. Here is hoping that is correct.  Thanks again for all you have done to keep us informed about this issue.”
