Day 1 and 2
Hannagan Meadow/Silver City

Well, it has been a tough week for our forests here in Arizona. The Wallow fire in particular is scorching some of the most beautiful forest, which translates into some of the better riding that our state has to offer. As for me, a couple of clichés come to mind: "Timing is everything" and "What a difference a day makes". It just so happens that the Coronado Trail and Hannagan Meadow is one of our favorite places to ride. We have probably done that route about 6 times over the last several years. We try to make at least one pass per year through there. So for Memorial Day weekend we planned a trip with our friends Dan and Kathy to take them down the Coronado Trail for the first time.

We had a great ride up the Salt River Canyon on U.S. 60 to Pinetop for lunch, a stop at Greer to ironically see the burned down Greer Lodge, (see pic) and then through Alpine for gas on our way to spend the night in the Hannagan Meadow Lodge. It is a beautiful setting in the tall pines featuring a 7 room lodge with a restaurant and a few cabins. Hannagan is about 24 miles South of Alpine with no phone service and some marginal internet. Basically a great place to ride to get away from the world for a while. We had a wonderful night there and got up the next morning for breakfast at the lodge before taking the awesome ride down the Coronado Trail, Hwy. 191 to Clifton.

After seeing the Greer Lodge burned to the ground a couple of hours earlier, I couldn't help but think about what would happen if there was a fire at this lodge. I will admit to being a good boy scout and scoping out an exit from our second floor room. As it turns out, 2 days later, what might end up being the biggest fire in Arizona started just West of Hannagan Meadow Lodge and reportedly burned right up to the lodge, thankfully without destroying it, then basically following the West side of 191 all the way to Alpine. I am still stunned by the fact that the beauty I just saw, marveled at and enjoyed just 10 days ago, has been gutted and reduced to charcoal laced tree trunks. Especially after just seeing this in all of its lush green glory, it is sickening to me to think about what it is going to look like now. My heart goes out those that live in the area, maybe retired there or have vacation homes that were planning on enjoying this landscape for a long long time. It is very sad and it isn't even over yet.

Click Here for a sequential map that was made by the Arizona Republic that tracks the fire and how many acres it has burned per day. You can see where the fire started just West of Hannagan Meadow. This really puts into perspective where the fire is relative to roads and towns that you might have visited in the past.

Not knowing what landscape changing event was to follow us just 48 hours later, we chalked Day 1 of our 4 day, 1200 mile ride as a great day and were ready to continue our ride South down the Coronado Trail. The ride from Alpine to Clifton is 95 miles and contains a reported 450 switchbacks, many marked at 10 mph. I don't know who counted all of these, but you can barely find on straight piece of asphalt in all 95 miles. At any rate, there are a whole bunch of curves, and the Federal Highway commission considers this drive to be the curviest in the nation. Deals Gap, the tail of the dragon seems to get all the press, probably because so many people get killed on it, but from what I read, that is a starter road compared to the Trail.

I recommend going down the road from North to South. It is just easier to enjoy the views as you are going down the hill in my opinion. As you leave Hannagan Meadow which is at over 9100 feet in elevation, you will climb to almost 9400 feet before descending 6000 feet to around 3300 in Clifton. Most of your ride will be in the 5-6000 foot range. Even though you will only have 70 miles to go from Hannagan Meadow to Clifton, this ride will take you a good 2.5 hours and that is if you don't stop much to take in the views. If you do, plan on over 3 hours to make the ride. You usually don't have to worry about much traffic. I counted 12 vehicles in the 70 miles. You usually have the road to yourself. That is except for the Longhorns that were in the road this time. These guys had some huge horns. It is a free range through there.

One landmark that we had missed the last 5 times traveling this road is the "Arrow Tree". This is a dead tree just off the road that bow hunters have used as target practice over the years. The old carcass of a tree is about 50 feet tall and has hundreds of arrows sticking out of it. In the past I had read about it, but had never gotten any good information about the exact location of it. This time I asked the lady at the gas station in Alpine and she gave me a pretty good description and we were able to find it. Here it is. If you want to see it for yourself, it is approximately 2 miles South of the Blue Range overlook on your right as you are going down the hill. Another way to find it is that it is about 150 yards North of the mile marker 223. So if you reach mile marker 223 and haven't seen the tree, you have gone too far. It is hard to find, but it is really there.

The Coronado Trail is listed as one of America's National Scenic Byways and is very deserving of this distinction. It is the consummate motorcycle road that utilizes the 360 degree view that you have from a bike, a road that tests your riding skills and entertains you with the beauty of Apache National Forest and several different landscapes along the way. When you reach the end of the 90 miles from Alpine, you are glad to have safely reached the end of the incredible road, but you are also a little sad that it is over. If you have not yet done the Coronado Trail, Hwy. 191, I would highly recommend putting this on your list of things to do this Summer. You won't be disappointed. Even though the first 20 miles from Alpine to Hannagan Meadow might be burned, to varying degree, the next 70 miles is reportedly not affected.

If you would like to spend the night at Hannagan Meadow Lodge, you can reach them at 928-339-4370 or www.hannaganmeadow.com . It is best to make reservations since there is limited availability. Also, this is a 90 mile stretch with no gas or cell phone coverage. So if you have a thirsty bike or need to check in with the babysitter, gas up in Alpine or Clifton before making the ride.

Our final destination on Day 2 was Silver City, NM. Once we got gas and snacks at the Shell station in Clifton, we continued South to Hwy. 78 where we turned East to New Mexico. This road starts out kind of tame but turns into one excellent 35 mile ride over the mountains from Three Way to Hwy. 180 in New Mexico. If Silver City is your destination, go South on 180 and you are only 46 miles away. If you are doing the loop back to Alpine, go North on 180 and you have a beautiful 73 mile ride ahead of you back to Alpine and 8000 feet in elevation.

In our case, we did a little of both. Last year we found this little old Mining Ghost Town called Mogollon, NM that is really and experience to get to and see. If you are heading to Silver City you will have to backtrack a little bit, but I think it is worth it. After turning North on 180 go about 20 miles and you will see a sign that identifies the turnoff on Hwy. 159 to the old ghost town of Mogollon, NM. This is an old mining town from the mid 1800's that is now a tourist stop. There was even a movie shot there in 1973 with Henry Fonda called "My Name is Nobody". There are still a couple of the movie sets and buildings that were used in the movie.

It is a 9 mile ride in and back. The first 4 miles are a nice 2 lane road and then it turns into a one lane road for the next 5 miles into Mogollon. You will climb 2000 feet on this road before you drop down into Mogollon. The road is in descent shape, but it is a very narrow one lane road with some blind corners that you will need to go very slow on. But it is more than worth the trip to see this old town with a lot of history. And if you like beauty shots for your bike, it provides some of those. Here is one. See links below for information.

Mogollon is a really fun side trip if you are in the area. You can plan it around breakfast or lunch at the Purple Onion cafe. Just keep in mind that it is the only restaurant in town. Mogollon is open from May to October.

From Mogollon we made it back to Hwy. 180 and headed the 65 miles to Silver City where we would spend the night and end Day 2 having logged 220 miles of some VERY slow and twisty roads. Our 2 day total was at 520 wonderful miles. Next week I will finish the last 2 days of the 4 day 1200 mile trip as we will head for the Gila Indian ruins North of Silver City and then on to Chiricahua National Monument and Bisbee.

Tidbits and Updates:

**There seems to have been some confusion over the bike nights schedule, but the calendar is making it real simple now. There is a Cyclerides.com Westgate Bike Night every Thursday for the rest of this month, ending on June 30th. So there is only 4 more counting this Thursday night. We will be looking at the Coyotes schedule when it comes out this summer to see what dates will be available in the Fall for Westgate. We will try and do as many as possible, but it will be dictated by Thursdays available that do not have a hockey game or other event at Jobing.com arena. Should have some answers by early August. Look forward to seeing you on the last 4 nights of this season.

**The Cyclerides.com Mesa Riverview Bike Night will run every Friday for the rest of June, ending on June 24th. So there are only 3 nights left for Mesa Riverview. This will be it for the season. We will look at the fall and see about starting it back up in September.

However, Friday June 17th should be a very big night at Mesa Riverview as we have special musical guest "Mogollon" playing that night. This is going to be a "Heroes" night honoring our Police, Fire and Military personnel. There will be a parade to kick off the night with special guest Jared Allen, All Pro defensive end from the Minnesota Vikings as well as many other NFL football players and other celebs. They will be there to help Jared raise money for his Homes For Wounded Warriors charity. Jared's passion is to raise money to build handicap accessible homes for our injured United States Military Vets. (See Jared's Video introduction) You will also be able to see the bike that Paul Jr. from American Chopper built "on air" for Jared's Home For Wounded Warriors. Pictures with Jared and the Bike will be available for a $10 donation to "Homes For The Warriors". With Mogollon playing and this special event, this is sure to be a big night at the Cyclerides.com Mesa Riverview Bike Night on June 17th. Be sure to check out this great venue for a bike night this month starting on June 10th. I think you will really enjoy it.

**Many of you know that I developed a product called Hat Saver several years ago. You spray Hat Saver on the outside of your ball cap or any kind of hat and it keeps the sweat from coming to the outside of your hat. This keeps the sweat stains off your hat and keeps it looking new. It is an amazing product and one that we certainly can use in our area. This would also be a great product for Firefighters, Police or Military that wear hats all of the time and have to keep them looking new. I am offering a 20% discount for Father's Day through June 16th. Just put in the coupon code FD20 in the shopping cart. We ship same day so there will be plenty of time to receive your order before June 19th. Click Here for 30 second commercial. Click Here for TV3 spot. Go to www.hatsaver.com to order.

For 2 years I have been looking for a great bike night location on the East side that would be comparable to the Westgate location. There is only one location in the valley that has a setup like Westgate, but Mesa Riverview, located at the Loop 202 and Dobson Rd. has the next best venue available to host a bike night. I wanted a location that is new, clean, attractive, well lit at night, has plenty of places to go eat and have fun, and could create that critical mass of excitement in one location. This is private property, so the management has agreed to close the street for 2 blocks in the complex from Bass Pro to the theatre. This will be utilized for motorcycle only traffic and parking. The great thing about Mesa Riverview is that they have 3 GREAT restaurants on the 3 corners in the middle of the 2 blocks plus 3 more within a few hundred feet.

These locations are Toby Keith's Bar and Grill with 18,000 square feet of Restaurant, 85 Foot Guitar Shaped Bar, Live Music, Dance Floor, Tv's And Outdoor Patio And Beer Served In Mason Jars.

Across the street from Toby's is the brand new 14,000 square foot Cactus Moon Sports Grill featuring 12 pool tables, Forty eight 65" plasma screen tv's, a huge bar in the middle, a dance floor and a Huge outdoor patio.

The other corner across from Cactus Moon is Matta's Grill & Cantina featuring 5,000 square feet, 2 floors of great Mexican food dining, a great bar, beautiful interior design and an outdoor patio.

Within a few hundred feet of walking distance from the street parking is Chili's and Famous Dave's. All of these restaurants will have Bike Night specials and are welcoming riders from all over the valley to a fun Friday night at Mesa Riverview located at the Loop 202 and Dobson Rd. in Mesa. There is also a Gyro shop at the end of the street by the theatre and a Yogurt shop next to Matta's.

CLICK HERE to see photos of these great restaurants.
