New Asphalt on Road to Tortilla Flat!

I have long talked about the ride to Canyon Lake and Tortilla Flat,
State Route 88 Apache Trail, as being one of my favorite Valley rides.  That is until the road got so bad that I could no longer recommend the route. The road had  been deteriorating for the last 4-5 years  to the point that it just wasn't worth the risk and wear and tear on your bike to go do it. I kept inquiring with ADOT about their plans to repave the road and thankfully they started the process last November and hoped to be completed by the end of the Summer. The great news is that it is now completely done with new asphalt all the way out to Tortilla Flat! The word is they are soon going to chip seal the 6 miles of pavement that goes beyond Tortilla Flat.

Once I found out that the roadwork was completely finished I literally couldn't wait to go ride the new asphalt, so Mrs. C. and I braved the heat last Sunday and rode out there to check it out. (See my Cyclerides.com Facebook Post) I am happy to report that they did a fantastic job of not only seamlessly laying the asphalt, but added and improved several pullouts along the way so that slower drivers have an easy way to pull over to let traffic pass by. The road is as smooth as a baby's butt and an absolute joy to ride. Completely new asphalt begins around mile marker 204 and on it to TF. It was very enjoyable riding this route again through the Tonto National Forest and Superstition Mountain Range taking in some of the more beautiful desert landscape that we have in the area as you drop into Canyon Lake.

After the customary stop at the Canyon Lake Vista, we continued on past the lake to Tortilla Flat where we had lunch at the Superstition Saloon and Restaurant. It had been a few years since we had been here and they went crazy with the dollar bills on the walls, and everywhere else for that matter. People from all over the world sign dollar bills and they put them on the walls, ceilings, you name it. The place is now completely covered with dollar bills everywhere. A lot of them are written on and dated from as recent as 2017 and 2018. The restaurant is a pretty basic diner type menu but the food is good. I had a cheeseburger and Mrs. C. had a chicken quesadilla that she said was very good. If you get a chance, try the Saddle Bar Stools on for size.

The restaurant is closed on Monday and Tuesdays in the Summer from June 1st to September 30th. Wednesday - Friday 10am - 5pm. Saturday and Sunday 9am - 7pm.

After lunch we walked to the next building down to the Country Store for a dip of Chocolate Chip ice cream in a cup. This was excellent ice cream and highly recommended after lunch. You will find that they continued the dollar bill wall papering theme in there as well, in fact took it to the next level as the air ducts and rafters are covered with dollar bills as well. Most of them signed and dated. Quite a sight to see.

For those of you that haven't been there, Tortilla Flat is an authentic remnant of an old west town, nestled in the midst of the Tonto National Forest, in the Superstition Mountain Range. Tortilla Flat started out as a stagecoach stop in 1904 and neither fire nor flood has been able to take away this historic stop along the Historic Apache Trail. Now the town consists of a Restaurant, Saloon, Gift Shop, Groceries and a U.S. Post Office. The signs say population 6. And yes, there really is 6 people that live there. In season there is live music on the patio 7 days a week starting Thanksgiving weekend.
See the Panorama of Tortilla Flat.

I would highly recommend putting this route back on your list of Valley rides. It is a beautiful ride and now on excellent pavement. Just be patient as there can be some slow traffic out there on the weekends. Relax and enjoy the scenery. Tortilla Flat is located 17 miles NE of Apache Junction on AZ State Route 88. A great way to make it a scenic ride from Scottsdale or the West Valley is to go through Fountain Hills to Hwy. 87 to Bush Hwy past Saguaro Lake, to Usery Pass, to Brown Rd., to Apache Trail (SR88) and on to Tortilla Flat. Click Here for Map.

Quick Tip: I Always recommend taking the 6 miles of paved road continuing on past Tortilla Flat. It is some of the prettiest part of the ride in my opinion. You go out for 6 miles till it turns to dirt, then turn around at the overlook. Beautiful ride. But they are getting ready to chip seal that part of the road. So be aware that it could be new chip seal. But check it out while you are there, it is worth the ride!
