Cyclerides.com Weekly Update

5/26/10

Greetings Riders,

Well, can you believe that it is already the end of May? Judging by the weather we have been enjoying, I would never have believed it. But it looks like that is all about to come to an end next week as they are predicting that we will solidly break the 100 degree barrier and reach as high as 110 by next Saturday. But, it is a dry heat right? Dry heat or not, it is still plenty hot on a motorcycle. My personal tolerance reaches to about 107 degrees. I can pretty much deal with that, but at 110 not so much. That is when I head for the high country. Accuweather has a great page for monthly weather that gives you the highs of the past months and a 15 day future forecast. Click Here to view.

Now that Summer is here and the days will be getting longer, we will all be looking to take some rides, most likely out of the Valley of the Oven to temperatures more bearable for riding. And as luck would have it, Phoenix Magazine has just come out with their Special Bonus Issue entitled the 2010 Arizona Travel Guide. This issue is all about traveling in Arizona and features 21 Must-See destinations in the State from Bisbee to Lake Powell and from Yuma to Canyon De Chelly as well as 5 highlighted motorcycle rides and more than 240 of the best places to play, eat and stay.

The layout of this magazine is really nice in that you can easily turn to your location of interest by looking at a map of the state of Arizona that stretches across 2 pages. On page 20 they have highlighted the 21 locations on the map that they are featuring indicating what page the article can be found on in the magazine. This makes it extremely easy to navigate to your area of interest. Even though I have been to most of these locations at least once, I enjoyed reading the perspective of someone else to see what I had missed as well as getting some ideas on good places to eat or side trips to take that I would have likely missed on my first visit. For example, here is part of the page that they did on Bisbee. It reminded me to do the Queen Mine Tour.

Even though I thought we had ridden to every major attraction in the state of Arizona, after closer review I found that I had only been to 20 of the 21 locations listed in this article. For some reason, I have not been to Canyon De Chelly, that is tucked in the far Northeastern part of the State. And for that matter, as I looked at the map, I had not been through the Petrified National Forest National Park either. So I guess that can only mean one thing. ROAD TRIP! Canyon De Chelly is one of those places that I have seen  many times on the weather report as the coldest part of the state, but it is tucked so far off the beaten path, that it has to be a destination. It is unlikely that you would just be riding by on your way to someplace else.

So as I sit here writing this story, I am already looking at Google maps to see what would be the best route for a round trip to this location. If any of you have ridden the roads around this area, let me know which ones are good and the ones to stay away from. This area is now on my radar and I will probably check it out soon. The 5 motorcycle rides that they highlighted were the same as last year. Click Here to watch the excellent 3 minute story that TV3 did on these rides.

So stop by your local book store and pick up the latest Phoenix Magazine 2010 Arizona Travel Guide. It will surely give you some good ideas and get you excited to plan your next trip. We subscribe to it and got it in the mail, but I called their office and found that it will be at bookstores and on newsstands today, May 27th. It might be a good issue to keep handy for when you are heading out for an Arizona road trip. Other News and Updates:

**Since this is Memorial Day this weekend, I would like to ask everyone to take just a moment sometime over the next few days to remember the thousands that have given their lives for our country. We can not ever quantify what their sacrifice means to the liberty that we have today.

**Check This Out.** We all listen to and sing the words to the Star Spangled Banner. But have you ever wondered what inspired Francis Scott Key to pen the words that became our National Anthem? I encourage you to take 11 minutes out of your weekend and set down to listen to this excellent narrative of how this song was written. It would also be a great history lesson for your kids. When I saw how long it was, I didn't think I would get through it, but I actually ended up listening to it 3 times. And the last 2 minutes is an outstanding rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. With all that is screwed up with this world today, this gives us hope that we can get our own government train wreck back on the tracks. You will enjoy the few minutes it takes to listen to this. It is quite inspiring and reminds us why America is so great. Click Here to Listen.

**If you have sent me an email in the last couple of weeks or so, I appreciate the replies and I am not ignoring you. The trip to Maui really put me behind and I am trying to catch up which I will do this weekend. Thanks for your support.
