Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
5/22/13

Greetings Riders,

Our heart goes out to the people in Oklahoma who have been hit by the brutal tornado’s. The devastation that I see on TV is just unbelievable. It is amazing how wind can do that to steel and throw cars around like that. I was watching the following clip live of an elderly woman whose house was reduced to rubble around her as she was holding her dog. But after the wind stopped, the dog was no where to be found, but she felt it was under the rubble. This is one of the feel good stories in a very disastrous event. If you love animals, this is a very good ending. Click here to view.

By the way, where is FEMA and the trailers? Haven’t heard anyone asking that question. But I have heard that out of all those thousands of homeless people there, only 114 are in shelters. That is because the Oklahomans are taking care of their own. That is what I remember about living in the Midwest. Go Okies! You are an inspiration to the rest of the United States.

Well, we have a holiday weekend coming up and it looks like the weather in the Southwest is going to be pretty good for motorcycle riding. I have plenty of ideas on the Day Rides section to get you out of town. One ride that I think would be good for this weekend is one I did a few years ago that I named the Cyclerides.com Monument Tour. This takes you through Montezuma Castle National Monument, Walnut Canyon National Monument and the Sunset Crater/Wupatki National Monument. You could also do an optional stop to Arizona Snow Bowl to ride the Skyride Scenic Chairlift that happens to open this Saturday. This could easily be a destination all by itself. Click Here for Monument Article with map and photos.

Mrs. C. and I have decided to take what has become our annual trip up the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH 1) to Carmel. But we are going to mix it up a bit this time. Since the weather is going to be nice the whole way with with highs of 95 in Palm Springs, we will take off early and ride directly to our first stop in Los Angeles on Wilshire Blvd., the Petersen Automotive Museum. This is one of the more famous car museums in the U.S. with many different displays that you might have seen on Speed Channel and other programs. The Petersen has been on my bucket list for some time.

We will then end the first night and 420 miles in Malibu to visit one of the famous biker stops on the PCH, Neptune’s Net. Another place I want to see is Paradise Cove Beach Café that has been the location for many TV shows, Movies and Commercials. See the front page of their web site and let the pictures cycle through. Pretty cool place. Here is a listing of all of the movies, etc. that have been shot there including Gidget, Baywatch and Happy Days.

The next day will take us 300 miles North up the PCH 1 to Carmel for the night. In my opinion, from Cambria to Carmel is 100 miles of the most beautiful road that there is in the U.S. You never know when taking this road how the weather will be as it is often overcast with marine layer off of the ocean, but the reports look pretty good calling for partly sunny and low to mid 60’s, which is really considered perfect through there. We will make our normal stop at the Nepenthe Restaurant in Big Sur for lunch or an ice tea on our way to Carmel. There is a weather cam at their site overlooking the ocean that you can view. If it is like it is today, we will be very happy.

A lot of times we go inland on the way back. But I think this time, after the night in Carmel, we will turn around and enjoy the PCH one more time as it looks different going the opposite direction and you have a better view of the ocean being on the West side of the road. Once we get back to L.A. on day 3, I’m not sure where we will stay before heading back to Phoenix. Who knows, we might even take a lap through Big Bear if time allows.

Where we end up is not important, it is just part of the mystery of the ride, but I am looking forward to putting 1500 meaningful miles on the bike along the way. That will put me right at 20,000 miles on the Mako Glide as it is today. Not bad mileage in the world of custom baggers.
