Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
5/11/11
Greetings Riders,
Well, we really need to be enjoying
this weather in the Phoenix area. The temps we have been having
seem more like March than May. As I look ahead, it is not predicted to be
over 100 degrees until May 25th. I have lived here a long time and don't
remember the month of May being this moderate. Let's enjoy it while we can,
because we all know what is coming. But I did read that due to La Nina, we
might have a little cooler Summer this year. Let's hope so.
Just thinking out loud, two weeks ago
in the newsletter I made
this comment. "How is the time going by so fast? I still
don't understand how the spectrum of time works. When I was 10 years old on
Summer break from school back in the small town of Lansing,
Kansas, I remember hanging around the house bored out of my mind. The minutes seemed like hours and the hours seemed like days. The 3
months of Summer seemed like a year.
Well, I had two readers smarter than I am respond with an
answer that I found very interesting and thought provoking. So if
you are my age and are also wondering how time goes by so fast, ponder on this
theory for a while. Here is what they said. "The perception of time passing at
different rates as you get older is easily explained as a simple function of
math. When you are ten and turn eleven you are 10% older so you have experienced
1/10 of your life in the last year. When your 50 and turn 51 you are 2% older.
Even though the two time periods are equal, our perception is that 2% goes much
faster than 10%." Ponder on that one while on your next ride.
And speaking of time, after one week off it is time for
the Cyclerides.com Mesa Riverview
Bike Night to start up for another 3 week run. If you missed
the last one on April 28th, you are in for a treat as we are bringing back the
band "Attitude Cat". They got rave reviews from the riders that week. And since
baggers are all the rage right now, I thought it would be fun to have a Custom
Bagger Ride-In Bike Show. So if you have a custom bagger with the all the
goodies on it, I will have a special place for you to park to display your bike.
I will also have a few ultra custom bikes displayed inside the
Cyclerides.com Photo Gallery for you to see. Enjoy the Restaurants, Bars, Food,
Outdoor Patios, Vendors, Music and Fun at the Cyclerides.com Mesa Riverview Bike
Night. SEE YOU THERE Friday Night!
Each week I am going to try and give
you a ride idea from the archives to help you have a reason to get
out and take a road trip. I have a 4 day planned for the end of the month that I
am really looking forward to. Last week I gave you 5 short ride ideas
read) that are near the valley
that will get you out for a couple of hours. This week I am going to highlight a
great day ride that is one of the better destinations in the State. Even though
it is relatively close to Phoenix, a lot of riders have not taken the ride up
Mount Lemmon in Tucson, AZ.
The Beautiful
Ride up Mt.Lemmon
(6/17/09)
I will be the first
to say that the ride between Phoenix and Tucson is probably the most
uninteresting 120 miles in the State. Even going through Florence Junction isn't
good enough to spend the extra 45 minutes to do it. For the most part it is
always windy, flat and boring. Which is probably why I don't go South very
often. But here is the good news. Once you get past this forgettable stretch of
asphalt and find the base of the Catalina Mountains in Tucson, you will soon be
riding up a 32 mile route that I call one of the hidden Jewels of Arizona, Mt.
Lemmon.
It had been over 6 years
since my last ride up Mt. Lemmon, and I have to say, I had forgotten
how beautiful it is. This road has more variety in 30 miles
than I have ever seen. As I was riding up I kept comparing the
landscape to other routes that I have ridden across the Western United
States, but it kept changing. It was almost like 3 different areas rolled into
one road.
Turning Northeast off
of Tanque Verde Road you will be looking directly into the Santa Catalina mountains, the
very same mountains that you will soon be dissecting on your way to the
top. As you approach the base of the mountain you will see hundreds,
if not thousands of giant Saguaro Cactus dotting the
hillside as you start your ascent on what is known as the Sky Island Scenic Byway to over 8200 feet in elevation with your final destination being
Summerhaven or Ski Valley.
After a couple thousand feet in elevation the
Saguaro cactus
will give way to boulder
outcroppings and small scrub pines that seem to grow taller
with every mile. A few more miles will have you riding on the side of the
mountain as you weave
and zig-zag your way up in elevation. The small rounded boulders will soon
turn to more jagged rock formations as you ascend to your way to Windy
Point Vista at over 6600 feet in elevation. This is where you will have
dramatic views of the Santa Catalina Mountains and its deep canyons, the
road below. You will get a
feel for the ruggedness of the sky islands
and their rise from the desert.
Another 1/2 mile will be a viewing area
called Hoodoo Vista
Point. This is a great stop that will give you a chance to see
the hundreds of Hoodoo's as you examine the geological wonders through this
stretch of the Coronado National Forest. What are Hoodoo's? (They are a tall
thin spire of rock that protrudes from the bottom of an arid drainage basin or
badland. Hoodoos are composed of soft sedimentary rock and are topped by a piece
of harder, less easily-eroded stone that protects the column from the elements.)
These Hoodoo's were especially interesting to me as a lot of them seem to have
an identifiable shape that you can see in them and one in particular was a
perfect profile of a face complete with eyes, nose and mouth. See if you can
pick it out in this picture. Click
Here.
The next 9 miles will have you winding your way
through more beautiful rock
outcroppings, smooth curves. a few twisties, tall pines and
aspens as you are rising in elevation another 2600 feet on your way to Summerhaven and Ski Valley at 8200 feet in
elevation. If you stay on this road it will take you right into Summerhaven
where there is a general store and good place to eat called the Cookie Cabin. This is log
cabin transformed into a restaurant that has indoor and patio seating where
you can enjoy a great pizza or their signature Giant cookies. The old Mt. Lemmon
Cafe that was famous for the pies is now closed.
The turn to your right just before you drop into
Summerhaven will take you on a 3 mile ride up to Ski Valley at Mt.
Lemmon where you can take a ski lift up to 9100 feet in
elevation for a panoramic view of the entire area. This is a nice ride to the
ski area and is recommended. Sky ride tickets for adults are
$9.00.
As I said in the beginning, this ride is the
motorcyclists gem of the Southwest. This 30 miles of road has you
in awe from the beginning with massive amounts of huge saguaros and beautiful
desert, twisty roads and canyons, breathtaking vistas that will have you rubber
necking to get a peek as you are riding, Hoodoo's that will entertain you
followed by tall pines and Aspen as you drop into Summerhaven to try and absorb
all that you have just experienced. It is truly like being in 3 different places
all in a 30 mile ride. The best way that I can describe this ride is that you
start out on your way to Tortilla Flat, you get a glimpse of Bryce Canyon minus
the red Hoodoo's on your way to the Sierra Nevada's and Yosemite National Park
in California before ending up in Colorado.
It is kind of hard to articulate in words, but you will definitely go through 3 distinct landscapes and geological
areas that will tickle your senses all the way up and have you looking forward
to the ride back down the mountain that is equally enjoyable.
You can choose your own route to Tucson. I prefer to just get it over with and go straight down I-10 to the
Grant Rd. exit, Grant Rd. to Tanque Verde, to the Catalina Hwy. which will lead
you to Mt. Lemmon. From I-10 and I-17 at the stack it is 157 miles to the top of
Mt. Lemmon. You will want to allow around 3 hours for the ride up and back if
you plan to do any sightseeing stops and have lunch at the top. I had forgotten
how great this ride is and am upgrading the rating on this ride to 5
spokes out of 5. This is an easy Day Ride from Phoenix. Optional stop
would be a ride through the Saguaro National Park East which is located just
South and East of Catalina Hwy. The only bad part of this ride is getting to
Tucson. Now is a particularly good time to do this ride as the Saguaros are
in bloom.

Tidbits and Updates:
I have been working on the Memorial Day
celebration that we will be doing on Thursday, May 26th at the Cyclerides.com Westgate
Bike Night. I seriously can't wait for
this. It is shaping up to be a touching and
memorable patriotic program that you will not want to miss. Here is
schedule as it is now.
*Memorial Day program starts at
7:15pm
*Patriot Guard Riders will ride in with
American Flags waving.
*National Anthem will be
sung.
*15 Minute Memorial Day Presentation to
Honor our Fallen
*Program includes a moving video and
song on Giant LED Screen you will not want to miss.
*A 15 minute Patriotic
set by Mogollon that is fantastic.
*Mogollon will be in concert the entire
night from 6PM - 9PM.
*Arizona Centennial Copper Chopper will be
on display, 5-10pm.
This will be well worth the
ride from all parts of the valley to participate in this
event to honor our fallen troops while sharing our love of
this great country. The night will rekindle your
patriotic spirit. Send this to your riding buddies and post on your rider sites.
We need to show support to our troops and honor our fallen. Hope to see you
there.
FYI: I am still looking for
a marching band to play some military fight songs to open the show. If you know
of a High School that could do it, let me know.

Childress collection.
For 2 years I have been looking for a great bike
night location on the East side that would be comparable to the Westgate
location. There is only one location in the valley that has a setup like
Westgate, but Mesa Riverview, located at the Loop 202 and Dobson Rd. has
the next best venue available to host a bike night. I wanted a location that is
new, clean, attractive, well lit at night, has plenty of places to go eat and
have fun, and could create that critical mass of excitement in one
location. This is private property, so the management has agreed to close the
street for 2 blocks in the complex from Bass Pro to the theatre. This
will be utilized for motorcycle only traffic and parking. The great thing
about Mesa Riverview is that they have 3 GREAT restaurants on the 3 corners
in the middle of the 2 blocks plus 3 more within a few hundred feet.
These locations are
Toby
Keith's Bar and Grill with 18,000 square feet of Restaurant, 85
Foot Guitar Shaped Bar, Live Music, Dance Floor, Tv's And Outdoor Patio And Beer
Served In Mason Jars.
Across the street from Toby's is the brand new 14,000
square foot
Cactus Moon Sports
Grill featuring 12 pool tables, Forty eight
65" plasma screen tv's, a huge bar in the middle, a dance floor and a
Huge outdoor patio.
The other corner across from Cactus Moon is
Matta's Grill &
Cantina featuring 5,000 square feet, 2 floors of
great Mexican food dining, a great bar, beautiful interior design and an outdoor
patio.
Within a few hundred feet of walking distance from the
street parking is Chili's and Famous Dave's. All of these
restaurants will have Bike Night specials and are welcoming riders from all over
the valley to a fun Friday night at Mesa Riverview located at the Loop 202 and
Dobson Rd. in Mesa. There is also a
Gyro shop at the end of the street by the theatre and
a Yogurt shop next to Matta's.
