Weekly Update
4/21/10
Greetings Riders,
Well, Arizona Bikeweek is over and
life as I know it is now getting back to normal. I am always
excited to see it coming up, but by about 2/3 of the way through, I am ready for
it to wind down. Overall, I thought it was a very good ABW. Events the
first weekend were fairly well attended, but the concerts at Cyclefest set new
records with over 13,000 in attendance for George Thorogood and over 8000
for Dierks. That tells me that there must have been a whole lot more riders
from out of town this year as they came in for the Cyclefest activities.
As with all annual events, I'm
sure the staff of ABW is already tweaking to make the event better next year,
but they are well on their way to building this into a premier national
event. As for my input, I would tighten up the vendor displays to
make it flow better. I seemed to lose track of where I had been and where I
was supposed to go next. Also, I prefer to do more riding and less standing
around. We have a beautiful state, how about five 200-300 mile rides,
maybe Monday through Friday, for those of us that like to go across a
few county lines in one day. I'm just saying.
My goal this year was to do at least
1000 miles for the week. I fell just a little short at 926
miles. Nine of us did the Wednesday Ride out of Stubbs. But as usual
we took a little detour from the map and went up to Jerome for
lunch to the Haunted Hamburger. Always a good time for a trip to
Jerome. We then came back down the hill and took 260 over to Strawberry and then
into Payson surprisingly seeing a lot of snow on the side of the road. At
least it wasn't ACTUALLY snowing on us like it did a couple of years ago.
For those of you that missed that, here is the short video, pretty funny.
Click Here. Then down the hill
to the Valley and back to Cyclefest. Always a fun day. We need more of
those. Click Here for some good photos from the day.
Everyone knows that I enjoy riding,
so you can imagine that seeing the odometer rolling up is exciting to me. I try to take a picture of the speedo when I cross milestone
mileage, and this time I was on the 51 heading to the PYO party when I
crossed 60,000
miles on the Road Glide. I've got it all fixed up the way I want
it, so my plan at this point is to keep it to 100,000 miles or until they come
out with another Yellow Road Glide. However, the correct numbers on
the Lotto could change my mind.
The Torch Run out of Chester's on
Saturday was incredible! I have heard several numbers, but I think
the one that is accurate was that 2700 bikes were on that ride. Quite a turnout,
and the biggest bike week ride to date raising over $55,000 for Special
Olympics. Chester's did a great job feeding everyone, getting them checked in
and executing the ride. Thanks to the DPS for an excellent escort. Check out the
massive amount of people and bikes. Click Here to view photos.
I ended ABW with the Wish Riders ride
for the Make-A-Wish foundation on Sunday morning. The group I ended
up being in started at the Cardinals Stadium. This was being filmed for an ABC
special that is supposed to air later in the year. You know when a network is
involved because the helicopters and the expensive equipment is
brought out. My entertainment on this 70 mile ride was watching this Mercedes SUV, that looked
like something out of a "Mad Max" movie. It was outfitted with a boom
attached to the roof with a camera on the end of it that would swing 360 degrees
around the vehicle. You would literally be doing 70 mph down the 101 and this
vehicle would pull up next to you and swing the camera right in front
of you to get the shot. Pretty darned impressive. I understand that
they will be back to the Phoenix in a month or so to do some more
filming.
So, Arizona Bikeweek 2010 is now in
our rear view mirror and we can get back to riding the State and
planning our trips this Summer. I will be out trying to find those routes and
little nuggets of scenery to share with you. I took some pictures throughout the
week.

Wednesday
I think this is going to be a great
venue for bike night as we fill the streets with vendors, music and
bikes.
For those of you on the East side of town, you
have not been forgotten. This is something that I have wanted to do
for a few years, and it is finally happening. I will be starting a new bike
night in Downtown Scottsdale on Wednesday nights. Many of you might remember a
few years ago when Arizona Bike Week had the Tuesday night party on Craftsman
Ct. in Downtown Scottsdale. We will be re-creating that great party by
blocking off Craftsman Ct. between 3rd Ave. and 5th Ave., just West of
Scottsdale Rd. each Wednesday night for motorcycle only
parking. This is the same location as the Downtown Scottsdale Block
Party.
Four bars and restaurants on this street will be
participating in this event with Bike Night specials including:
Upper Deck Sports Grill,
Dos
Gringos,
Whitehouse and
Acme Bar &
Grill.
Three of these places have outdoor patios
and are set up perfect for a bike night. Plenty of trees and a nice
ambiance around. We will have LIVE Music, vendors, food specials, drink specials
and plenty of plenty of fun as we head into riding season.
The Weather is Supposed to be 85 degrees and
sunny this Wednesday.
This would be the perfect time to
give the Cyclerides.com Downtown Scottsdale Bike Night a try. Live Music
with Sal Carlino!
Special Thanks to Hacienda
Harley-Davidson in Scottsdale as our first sponsor of this event.
Be sure to stop by their display to see the latest in Harley-Davidson and Custom
motorcycles.
If you would like to be
