Weekly Update
4/14/10
Greetings Riders,
Well, Arizona Bikeweek 2010 is
officially under way. The pre-rally dealership parties are history
and riders are looking forward to the charity rides this week and the start of
Cyclefest at Westworld. I was told that there are over 200 vendors that will be
setting up this year. That should create some good eye candy and browsing before
the concerts get underway each night. As usual, we will be doing the Wednesday
Ride for Kids out of Buddy Stubbs. I think we have done this one
for at least 7 years in a row now and it is always enjoyable. It is tough for me
to turn down a good day ride out of town. Should be fun. Since I am always
looking for longer rides, I might do the Firefighter Ride on
Friday as well. That one takes you on a nice ride through Globe, Roosevelt
Lake, Jake's Corner and back to Westworld. Saturday, I plan to join the
huge Torch
Ride out of Chester's to Westworld and the Make-A-Wish Ride on
Sunday. Throw in hosting 3 Bike
Nights in between and that should keep me busy for the week.
See all of the remaining Arizona
Bikeweek activities on their event calendar at www.azbikeweek.com . My photos
from the week so far can be found HERE.
Rusty Childress has taken some excellent photos as usual, they can be seen HERE.
I mentioned the Make-A-Wish Ride
above. This could very well be the best kept secret
for a potentially big ride to ever hit the valley. I will tell you more
about that in just a minute, but right now I would like to share with you a
story that I did not know, and that is how Make-A-Wish got started. I'm sure
most everyone has heard of the Make-A-Wish foundation, it is one of the most
recognizable charities of all time. But what you might not know is that
Make-A-Wish started with a DPS officer right here in Phoenix 30 years ago.
Here is how the story goes.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation traces its
beginning to one boy’s wish. In 1980, 7-year-old Chris Greicius was
being treated for leukemia. Every day, he dreamed of becoming a police officer.
U.S. Customs Officer Tommy Austin had befriended Chris and his mother, Linda
Bergendahl-Pauling. He also promised Chris a ride in a police helicopter. When
Chris’ health worsened, Austin contacted Ron Cox, an Arizona Department of
Public Safety officer, and planned a day that would lift Chris’
spirits.
On April 29, 1980, Austin and a
caring group of DPS personnel started Chris’ day with a tour of the city in a
department helicopter, which also flew him to headquarters. Three
cruisers and a motorcycle officer greeted him before his meeting with the DPS
command staff. There, Chris was sworn in as the first honorary DPS patrolman in
state history. But his experience didn’t stop there. Cox contacted John’s
Uniforms, which agreed to make a custom-tailored DPS uniform for Chris. The
store owner and two seamstresses worked through the night to finish it. The
officers presented the official uniform to Chris on May 1 and arranged a
motorcycle proficiency test so he could earn wings to pin on his uniform.
Needless to say, Chris passed the test with flying colors on his
battery-operated motorcycle.
On May 2, Chris was back in the
hospital. He asked to arrange the room so he could always see his
uniform, his motorcycle helmet and his “Smokey Bear”-style campaign hat. DPS
motor officer Frank Shankwitz presented Chris with his motorcycle wings. He
accepted them with a smile that lit up the room. The following day, Chris
passed away, but not before seeing his dream come true and experiencing the
hope, strength and joy that came from receiving his wish. See Chris Greicius picture in
uniform.
They saw how happy Chris was knowing
his wish came true, and that the wish seemed to take some of Chris
and Linda's pain away – replacing the anguish with smiles and laughter. They
thought that if one boy's wish could create such happiness, maybe they could do
the same for other children. They presented the plan to the people who helped
grant Chris' wish. Linda and others endorsed the plan. Thus, the Chris Greicius
Make-A-Wish Memorial – which later became known as the Make-A-Wish
Foundation – was born.
As most of you know that have
followed my toy rides over the last 8 years, where we bus in
150-200 homeless kids and allow them to pick out any 3 gifts to take home
with them from the thousands of toys that the riders drop off, I
really have a heart for helping kids and have always had a silent
admiration for the Make-A-Wish Foundation for what they do for terminally ill
children. So when I was approached by Marcia Roeder of the Wish Riders to help
get the word out about the upcoming Wish Riders Highway 101 Run, I was more than
happy to join the cause and do what I could to let riders know about this
amazing, one of a kind event that will be taking place this Sunday.
Apparently ABC Television feels the
same about the Make-A-Wish Foundation because they are in the midst
of shooting a one hour television show featuring the big hearts of motorcycle
riders across the United States called The Wish Riders. Wish Riders is a
one-hour television special taped in honor of the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s 30th
anniversary. Wish Riders will follow an eclectic group of bikers on amazing
journeys to where they'll help someone facing a tough road. Full of colorful
personalities, loud bikes, and emotional, life-changing moments, the initial
episode will be filmed in part at the world famous Arizona Bike Week, including
filming of this ride from the ground and from the air.
Here is where the Wish Riders need
your help. On Sunday, April 18th, the Wish Riders Highway 101
Run will begin from 9 area Harley-Davidson dealerships. The start times for
each dealership will be timed so that all of the 9 rides will meet up at
Westworld for Arizona Bikeweek. This will all be filmed for the TV show,
including activities at Arizona Bikeweek throughout the week, which will
be shown on ABC television in early summer. All rides leaving the
dealerships will converge on Westworld at the same time. Don't miss the
concert with Mogollon Sunday afternoon at 4:00 pm in the Handlebar
Saloon. Rumor has it that we could see some big surprises at this show.
Mogollon Rocks!

Bike Nights This Week
Tuesday
NEW!! Day Changed to
Tuesday.
For the riders in the Southeast Valley, the
Downtown Chandler Bike Night is back on! This year, the night for motorcycles in
Chandler changed. It is now on Tuesday nights. The really good news
is that the road will be blocked off for motorcycle only traffic which will
make this a much more safe and enjoyable event.

specials from:
San Tan Brewery,
Murphy's Law,
El Zocalo
and
Piza Piza.
Thanks to the City and the Downtown
Chandler Community Partnership for making this happen. Once again we will have
vendors, music and participating bars and restaurants for you to enjoy. I will
bring more details to you as I get them. Downtown
Chandler is located just 5.5 miles South of U.S. 60 on Arizona Ave. adjacent to
Dr. AJ Chandler Park. (MAP) Bike Night will be from 6pm - 10pm. Look forward to seeing
all of you back again this year!

Wednesday
I think this is going to be a great
venue for bike night as we fill the streets with vendors, music and
bikes.
For those of you on the East side of town, you
have not been forgotten. This is something that I have wanted to do
for a few years, and it is finally happening. I will be starting a new bike
night in Downtown Scottsdale on Wednesday nights. Many of you might remember a
few years ago when Arizona Bike Week had the Tuesday night party on Craftsman
Ct. in Downtown Scottsdale. We will be re-creating that great party by
blocking off Craftsman Ct. between 3rd Ave. and 5th Ave., just West of
Scottsdale Rd. each Wednesday night for motorcycle only
parking. This is the same location as the Downtown Scottsdale Block
Party.
Four bars and restaurants on this street will be
participating in this event with Bike Night specials including:
Upper Deck Sports Grill,
Dos
Gringos,
Whitehouse and
Acme Bar &
Grill.
Three of these places have outdoor patios
and are set up perfect for a bike night. Plenty of trees and a nice
ambiance around. We will have LIVE Music, vendors, food specials, drink specials
and plenty of plenty of fun as we head into riding season.
The Weather is Supposed to be 83 degrees and
sunny this Wednesday.
This would be the perfect time to
give the Cyclerides.com Downtown Scottsdale Bike Night a try. Live
Music!
Special Thanks to Hacienda
Harley-Davidson in Scottsdale as our first sponsor of this event.
Be sure to stop by their display to see the latest in Harley-Davidson and Custom
motorcycles.
If you would like to be
a Sponsor or a Vendor at this event, email me at info@cyclerides.com. Should be a great place for a Wednesday
night bike night in Scottsdale. Click Here For Information
Page and for New Photos of the
street, restaurants and an aerial view. Should be fun!

to make this one even better than last year with different programming every
week. Click
