Weekly Update
Greetings Riders,
Well, Arizona Bike Week has finally come to a close. It seems to have been a long week for me this year. With the death of Kimmy on day 2, a lot of us rode with heavy hearts, trying to carry on as she would have wanted. So on Wednesday, our group, that ended up being 25 bikes, met up at Buddy Stubbs for the Wednesday Ride. They had a good route picked out to go South, but it was such a nice warm day, we decided to make up our own route and went North for the day through Page Springs, Old Town Cottonwood for lunch, Jerome for a stop at the Spirit Room and down the beautiful 12 mile Mingus Mountain on 89A to Fain Rd. where we made our way back to the Valley via Hwy. 69 and I-17. It was a beautiful day to ride this really good route.
We then ended up in Cave Creek at The Hideaway where Mark Bradshaw sponsored a ride for me from the Hideaway to Westworld for the presentation of the "Arizona Bike Week Hero" award. It was an honor to be chosen for this award and I would like to thank ABW once again for thinking of me when considering who to choose this year. And thanks to all of you for supporting our events throughout the past several year's. Picture of presentation. (Photo by Rusty Childress)
Thursday we had the first night of the Westgate Bike Night. It was a huge night and record crowd. Not only was it the first night back for the season at Westgate, but we also honored the fallen four from a year ago and focused on Ernie Lizarraga who was badly injured in the accident. The big question was, would he ride into Westgate on his motorcycle for the first time since the accident? The answer was a resounding YES! See Picture. Led by a Fire Truck, and supported by 60 firefighters behind him, he rode his chopper down Coyote Blvd. to cheers from the crowd. It was an awesome and emotional sight to see and be a part of. When Ernie got on stage, he had a surprise for me. He presented me with a Peoria Fire Dept. Firefighter hat complete with my last name on it. I was completely surprised by this and it will be a permanent part of my memorabilia display. Thanks to Ernie and all of the firefighters who participated for such a nice gesture.
After playing a video about Ernie from TV3 on the giant LED, I then spoke with Ernie on stage to hear in his own words how he was doing. His recovery has been remarkable and he is an inspiration to us all. The message is that if we work hard and have the determination to do something like ride a motorcycle again, that all things are possible and good things can happen. We also heard thank you's from Jason Anania who was also injured in the accident. My apologies for the low volume of sound. We were using the band PA that just didn't seem to carry enough volume for all of the people that were there. See the crowd.
It was now time to say goodbye to Kimmy. I reflected a little about Kimmy as we had her picture on the LED screen. We had 100 white balloons that were signed by riders to Kimmy. The first group were released by her daughter Kelly, then rest followed. Kelly then released one large pink balloon with Kimmy's name on it and a pink glow stick attached to it. I said, "Kimmy, this one has a light on it so you can see it coming". I hope she did. Overall, it was a great evening to see Ernie ride in and begin his riding life again, while giving Kimmy the sendoff that she deserved. The turnout was a record crowd as we estimated to have 2200-2500 riders attend on this night. Thanks to all who participated.
On Friday we went to the start of the Hamster ride at Paul Yaffe's shop and then out to Cave Creek for lunch and to the Hideaway for a bit before heading back to Westworld for a while. It was record heat that day of 100 degrees that started off a few sunburns for the season. I didn't get to hear "Heart" that night, but EVERYONE said it was one of the best shows ever at ABW.
Saturday, Mrs. C. and I did the Torch Run with Chester's HD and then hung around Westworld for most of the day. Sunday, we were back at Westworld for the Kimmy Celebration of Life ceremony at 1pm. My hat is off to Jim Moore for the great job of emceeing the event, I'm sure that had to be hard. Also to Cliff for the memorial ceremony and message that I know Kimmy would have wanted.
We ended the day with Mogollon starting at 3pm. These guys just seem to keep getting better with age and can still rock like no other. I'm going to have to figure out a way to get them out to Westgate for a bike night. Maybe I can get them on May 26th to play for the Memorial Day event that I have planned. Duane, are you in??
So ABW 2011 is now in the books and I will be turning my attention to the bike nights that I will be running for the next 13 weeks at the Westgate Bike Night and for 10 weeks at the new one for the East side, the Mesa Riverview Bike Night at the Loop 202 and Dobson in Mesa that is starting this Friday night from 5-9pm. We will not have it on the first Friday of May and June. It will end on June 24th. Ride on in for the first night to see this great venue for a bike night.

**Thanks to all who attended the Westgate Bike Night on Thursday, it was an incredible crowd and a fun program seeing Ernie. The weather for Thursday at Westgate should be fine at 81 degrees for a high. Maybe a little windy, but you will enjoy the Sal Carlino Band, all the bikes, the good food and fun. My next big blowout event night at Westgate will be a Memorial Day celebration on Thursday, May 26th. Save the date. Don't forget to pick up your brand new Westgate Bike Night T-Shirt. Friday Nights
EAST SIDERS! This one is for you! Mesa Riverview Bike Night begins a 10 night run on Friday, April 8th from 5-9pm.
We will not be able to have the bike night on the first Friday of May and June.
For 2 years I have been looking for a great bike night location on the East side that would be comparable to the Westgate location. There is only one location in the valley that has a setup like Westgate, but Mesa Riverview, located at the Loop 202 and Dobson Rd. has the next best venue available to host a bike night. I wanted a location that is new, clean, attractive, well lit at night, has plenty of places to go eat and have fun, and could create that critical mass of excitement in one location. This is private property, so the management has agreed to close the street for 2 blocks in the complex from Bass Pro to the theatre. This will be utilized for motorcycle only traffic and parking. The great thing about Mesa Riverview is that they have 3 GREAT restaurants on the 3 corners in the middle of the 2 blocks plus 3 more within a few hundred feet.
These locations are Toby Keith's Bar and Grill with 18,000 square feet of Restaurant, 85 Foot Guitar Shaped Bar, Live Music, Dance Floor, Tv's And Outdoor Patio And Beer Served In Mason Jars.
Across the street from Toby's is the brand new 14,000 square foot Cactus Moon Sports Grill featuring 12 pool tables, Forty eight 65" plasma screen tv's, a huge bar in the middle, a dance floor and a Huge outdoor patio.
The other corner across from Cactus Moon is Matta's Grill & Cantina featuring 5,000 square feet, 2 floors of great Mexican food dining, a great bar, beautiful interior design and an outdoor patio.
Within a few hundred feet of walking distance from the street parking is Chili's and Famous Dave's. All of these restaurants will have Bike Night specials and are welcoming riders from all over the valley to a fun Friday night at Mesa Riverview located at the Loop 202 and Dobson Rd. in Mesa. There is also a Gyro shop at the end of the street by the theatre and a Yogurt shop next to Matta's.
A live band featuring "Tin Weasel" in center court will be enjoyed by all the riders walking the streets as well as dining on the 3 outdoor patios. Toby's will then start National band acts at 9pm inside their place. There will also be vendors and special attractions throughout the run of this new East Side Bike Night. If you would like to be a vendor at this bike night, email me at .
I would like to give special thanks to our First Sponsors of the Mesa Riverview Bike Night.
