Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
3/30/11

Greetings Riders,

Well, it has been a tough and emotional start to Arizona Bike Week this year. I am extremely saddened to report that Kimmy Chapman, owner of Biker Information Guide was killed late Saturday afternoon in a motorcycle accident. Kimmy, who was riding on the back of her boyfriend Tapper's bike were riding Eastbound on Bell road entering the intersection of 43rd ave. when a car turned left in front of them, ejecting Kimmy from the bike. Due to extensive injuries from the accident she died at the scene of the crash. Tapper survived the impact and is now in stable condition with a broken femur, pelvis, ankle and fused vertebrae. He is currently in ICU and will probably be there for a while. They are allowing no visitors for 2 weeks.

This came as horrible news to me as it did thousands of other Arizona motorcyclists as Kimmy has been a fixture in the motorcycle world for the last 15 years. I had personally known Kimmy for the past 12 years as we both started our endeavors into the motorcycle media world at about the same time. She was doing the print media with the Biker Information Guide and I went the internet route. Throughout the years we would cross market and help each other along the way. In fact, for the last couple of years, I have been writing travel articles for the biker guide. She would always be there with the gentle reminder that my article was due and wouldn't take no for an answer.

Kimmy was one of those people that was full of faith and love for the Lord who wore it on her sleeve. There was no doubt where she stood in her faith walk and as a result, she had the gift of being a friend to everyone. One of her proudest sections of the Guide that she always talked about with me were the pages she donated to bring attention to Biker Friendly Churches, always wanting to give back.

Kimmy had an endearing personality that commanded your attention, eyes that would be focused on you as if you were the only one around, all with a million dollar smile to back it up. When Kimmy walked into a room, she would light it up, and if you were a close friend, you knew a "Big Hug" and a kiss on the cheek would be coming your way. She was truly a one of a kind special person that will be sorely missed and not replaced in the Arizona motorcycle world. Her memory and legacy will live on for years.

I will miss Kimmy but will always be glad that I had the opportunity to know her, share our faith and work with her over the last 12 years as our friendship grew and our respective businesses crossed paths. She was always the first to offer any help she could to make something good happen for the motorcycle world. I was fortunate to be able to spend some time with Kimmy at the Chester's event on Friday night just 19 hours before the accident. She was full of vigor as usual, telling me what she had planned for the upcoming biker guide. With her camera in hand, she wanted a picture with me for the Gotcha page, little did I know that it would be the last one that we would take. Click Here to View.

Kimmy, you will be missed by Mrs. C. and myself, along with thousands of Arizona motorcyclists who have gotten to know you over the years. God Bless you for all that you have done. Along with the memorial for the fallen four riders from last year, I will also be honoring Kimmy at the first Cyclerides.com Westgate Bike Night on Thursday, March 31st. There will be a giant helium balloon that you will be able to sign to her that will be released to the heavens for her to read at 7:30pm. I know her and Waldo will be looking down on us this week watching the fun. This is a tough time for all, but I do know that Kimmy would want us all to be out there enjoying the week. Let's all participate, make it a fun safe week, and ride in her honor.

This just in. A Celebration of Life will be held at Westworld on Sunday afternoon, April 3rd. Please monitor the Cyclerides.com Facebook page as I will pass along the memorial service times as soon as I get them. Tidbits and Updates:

***If you are in the area and can make it, join me for the following presentation on Wednesday.
Wednesday, March 30th
Arizona Bikeweek Hero Award Presentation. As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Arizona Bikeweek has chosen me as their "Arizona Bikeweek Hero" award recipient for 2011. I'm not really comfortable with this kind of recognition, as I am happy just remaining under the radar and do what I do, but I am honored that they would think of me as having a positive impact on the motorcycle industry in Arizona over the last several years. The award will be given at 8pm on Wednesday, March 30th at Westworld in the Handlebar Saloon following the Miss Arizona Bikeweek competition. I would be honored to have all of those who could attend share this with me. If you are in the area, we will be riding from the Hideaway to Westworld at 6pm that day.

***I mentioned last week that the finishing touches were being put on the Cyclerides.com Westgate Bike Night which starts on Thursday, March 31st. It is all coming together nicely and looks like it is going to be a great kickoff to the Bike Night season at Westgate City Center. The first night will be a tribute to the fallen and injured riders of the horrible motorcycle accident on Carefree highway that happened almost exactly one year ago. Ernie Lizarraga, the Phoenix Fire Captain who was in extremely serious condition after the accident, clinging to life and in a coma for a month has been in intense rehabilitation ever since. I am happy to announce that Ernie will be at this first night on March 31st and is anxious to address the crowd from the stage to give us an update on his past year.

At 7:15pm 17 year old Alyssa Simmons will sing the National Anthem. Following this, Captain Ernie Lizarraga will be lead into Coyote Blvd. by a fire truck from his station escorting a large contingent of firefighters on motorcycles that will be riding to Westgate to help celebrate Ernie's return to health and hopefully see him back on a bike real soon. We will play a short video on the giant LED screen about Ernie's recovery and the accident that happened one year ago. I will then do a short interview with Ernie on stage to let him tell you in his own words how he has progressed over the last year. I also welcome others from the accident and families of the victims to attend and be recognized as well. This will be a very special night for Ernie and the others involved while also giving you a chance to personally show your support. We will be honoring Kimmy Chapman as well. There will be a giant helium balloon that you will be able to sign to her that will be released to the heavens for her to read at 7:30pm.

There will be Vendors, a Live Band featuring award winning "A Boy Named Sue" from 6-9pm at center court in Events Plaza of Westgate. Bike Night specials at participating restaurants, Motorcycle Parking on Coyote Blvd. and a GOOD TIME for ALL. See more information below and go to the Cyclerides.com Westgate Bike Night page for all the details.

For the first time ever there is an official Cyclerides.com Westgate Bike Night T-Shirt that will be available at the Arrowhead HD booth at Westgate on Bike Night for $15.00. They will also be available at Arrowhead Harley-Davidson and some Ridenow stores. Very cool shirt back. Take a look! They will also be available online after the 31st. Let me know what you think.

EAST SIDERS! This one is for you!
***Cyclerides.com Mesa Riverview Bike Night begins a 10 night run on Friday, April 8th from 5-9pm.
For 2 years I have been looking for a great bike night location on the East side that would be comparable to the Westgate location. There is only one location in the valley that has a setup like Westgate, but Mesa Riverview has the next best venue available to host a bike night. I wanted a location that is new, clean, attractive, well lit at night, has plenty of places to go eat and have fun, and could create that critical mass of excitement in one location. This is private property, so the management has agreed to close the street for 2 blocks in the complex from Bass Pro to the theatre. This will be utilized for motorcycle only traffic and parking. The great thing about Mesa Riverview is that they have 3 GREAT restaurants on the 3 corners in the middle of the 2 blocks plus 3 more within a few hundred feet.

These locations are Toby Keith's Bar and Grill with 18,000 square feet of Restaurant, 85 Foot Guitar Shaped Bar, Live Music, Dance Floor, Tv's And Outdoor Patio And Beer Served In Mason Jars.

Across the street from Toby's is the brand new 10,000 square foot Cactus Moon Sports Grill featuring 12 pool tables, Forty eight 65" plasma screen tv's, a huge bar in the middle, a dance floor and a Huge outdoor patio.

The other corner across from Cactus Moon is Matta's Grill & Cantina featuring 2 floors of great Mexican food dining, a great bar, beautiful interior design and an outdoor patio.

Within a few hundred feet of walking distance from the street parking is Chili's, Logan's Roadhouse and Famous Dave's. All of these restaurants will have Bike Night specials and are welcoming riders from all over the valley to a fun Friday night at Mesa Riverview located at the Loop 202 and Dobson Rd. in Mesa.

A live band in center court will be enjoyed by all the riders walking the streets as well as dining on the 3 outdoor patios. Toby's will then start National band acts at 9pm inside their place. There will also be vendors and special attractions throughout the run of this new East Side Cyclerides.com Bike Night. If you would like to be a vendor at this bike night, email me at info@cyclerides.com .

I am looking forward to bringing some good fun to the East Valley riders and am currently adding the details to the page, but CLICK HERE to see some photos to give you an idea of how nice this property is and general information. SAVE THE DATE! Friday, April 8th and help me kick off this exciting new event.
