Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
2/22/12

Greetings Riders,

Well, those of us in Arizona are in some prime time weather for riding around the valley. Won’t be long till we will be pointing our bikes to the North to take in some great riding and scenery. But for now, short runs out to the lakes, Saguaro, Canyon, Pleasant or Bartlett are excellent destinations to get out and enjoy this beautiful weather. Last Thursday I was in the Bartlett Lake area doing a photo shoot of the Mako Glide for American Bagger Magazine with photographer Rusty Childress. He is a really good photographer. We utilized the road to Seven Springs for the riding shots which is a nice little extension to your ride to Bartlett. Fun twisties and beautiful scenery with a view of 4 peaks. Rusty took 689 photo’s but I paired it down to 35 for you to view. Who said the raked baggers don’t handle well? Check out the cornering shots. Click Slideshow button in upper right for full screen viewing. Click Here to view. For those of you that were on the Centennial Ride, take a look at this composition photo taken by Dan Eckstein on Washington St. with the American Flags. Click Here to View.

I had been working on motorcycle stuff a lot lately with the Centennial Ride and getting ready to begin the Cyclerides.com Westgate Bike Night on March 29th, so last Saturday afternoon I decided to get back in the air for a change and flew the 172 up to Las Vegas to see the Cirque Du Soleil “Viva Elvis” show. Being HUGE fans of the Cirque “Beatles Love Show” and the Cirque ‘Michael Jackson Show” that we saw at U.S. Air Arena on New Years Eve, we were anxious to see this one as well.

At about 3:30 PM Saturday we took off for my first time flying to Las Vegas with our destination being the North Las Vegas Airport. It is much easier to just fly into Henderson, but at this stage of my flying career, with a little over 300 hours, I usually seek out the more challenging way and wanted the experience of negotiating the Las Vegas Bravo airspace. This is a lot harder and more involved way to go for sure, with radio work and many vectors starting 30 miles away, but the pay off is the route they bring you in takes you right over the top of the Las Vegas strip and over McCarran Intl. Airport which was cool to see.

It was a 2 hour flight and we landed at about 4:30 PM local time at North Las Vegas. We took a cab to the new Aria Hotel & Casino where the Elvis Show is and checked in. Wow! We had not been to the new City Center complex with the Aria and several other hotels and shopping before, but it is really nice. The Aria is a 4000 room hotel that is absolutely “state of the art”. Everything in the room is controlled electronically from a touch screen next to your bed including pushing a button to close the curtains on the floor to ceiling windows in this 520 sq. ft. room and choosing music to play on the TV. Being from Kansas, I remember being impressed when I saw my first phone in a hotel bathroom at the Peach Tree Plaza in Atlanta, GA. 35 years ago. This takes that to a whole new level. The touch panel and the TV even displayed my name on the screen. Ok, obviously I am easily impressed, but if you are looking to splurge for a night, this would be the place to do it.

After a quick walk on the strip, we went to the Crystals shopping area attached to the Aria for some dinner at Wolfgang Puck Pizzeria & Cucina. Excellent food as you might have guessed and not as expensive as I thought it would have been. But the lasagna was well worth it. We then made our way to the Elvis show room for the Viva Elvis 9:30 PM show. Given that we had seen the Beatles Love show twice and the Michael Jackson show, our expectations were very high for this one. So after reading this you are planning to go to Vegas to see one of these shows, here is my review. In my opinion, the Elvis show was very good, and if you hadn’t seen a show like this before, I’m sure you would enjoy it, especially if you like Elvis music. (Look at picture of stage) But in comparison to the Beatles “Love” show, it is not even close, in my opinion.

If you are planning a trip to Vegas for a quick getaway, I would absolutely recommend the Beatles “Love” show at the Mirage Hotel. It has won Best Show in Vegas 4 years in a row. Regardless if you are big fan of the Beatles or not, the Cirque Du Soleil show wrapped around their music is outstanding. I’m sure we will be riding up there in the near future for our 3rd time seeing that show. To read about our ride to Las Vegas in October of 2008, complete with photo’s, map and links, Click Here.

By the time we slept in a bit on Sunday morning, we made our way back to the airport by around 11:30 AM greeting by 28 MPH winds. Fortunately right in our face so it wasn’t a huge deal to take off in. The ATC routed us to the Northeast going right over the top of Nellis AFB and just to the South of Las Vegas Intl. Speedway. We had a nice flight back and was back in the Valley by around 2 PM. So after 4.3 hours of flying, I have gotten my fix and will be enjoying the beautiful 80 degree weather that is forecast for this weekend by riding over to the Stubbs Classic Car and Bike Show on Saturday and checking out the Monopoly Game at Arrowhead HD on Sunday.

We are right at the doorstep of some great riding weather and plenty of things to do over the next several weeks. Should be fun. Look forward to seeing you this weekend.
