Hope everyone is enjoying the great riding weather we are having now. This
is one reason that I wanted to start the Cyclerides.com Bike
Night at Westgate Entertainment District earlier this
year, so that we could take advantage of these perfect riding temps. If you
haven’t seen the announcement or are new to the letter, we will begin bike night
on Friday nights this year for the first 4 Fridays of March starting on March
3rd. We will then switch to Thursday nights on March 30th till the end of the
season on June 1st. This will give us one full month of much better riding
weather. We will begin with live music from the 74th Street Band on March 3rd. I
am looking forward to the change. Hope to see you there.
If you missed the newsletter
, I reviewed the Vintage Motorcycle auction in Las Vegas last
week, highlighting the changing tastes and ages of vintage
motorcycle buyers. This week I am going to follow that up with a recent
Harley-Davidson announcement that they will be bringing out 50 new models over
the next 5 years, largely due to the changing ages and tastes of the new
generation of motorcycle riders. Sales for HD have been leveling off and falling
for the last few years. The reasons for that is because the typical
Harley-Davidson buyers of the last 30 years are getting older, not able to ride
anymore, or are just not buying new bikes.
As a result, HD is having to change the models they are releasing to
reflect the new generation of riders. This was evidenced today as
they just released a new Road King “Special”. It is the first-ever blacked-out
model with the Milwaukee-Eight 107 V-Twin engine giving it a new attitude that
fits well with current buyers. Personally, I am from the older generation and am
a card carrying “chromosexual”. The more chrome the better, so the blacked-out
look doesn’t work for me. But it does give it a more aggressive look for sure.
Click Here for story and photos of the new Road
As you can see by the styling of the new Road King model, the
motor company is trying to make the generational change in styling to
accommodate the younger buyers. With the planned introduction of 50 new models
over the next 5 years, which would be roughly 10 per year, you can expect some
radical departures from the status quo of HD styling of the last 40 years. And
you will surely see some more smaller sized bikes for new riders and some
electric models like the LiveWire included in that as well.
To give you a window into the future of Harley-Davidson, I
would like to give you some quotes from Matt Levatich, the CEO of
Harley-Davidson that were taken from an analyst call as reported by the
Milwaukee Business Journal. I will link to the complete article
“The success we saw with the launch of the Milwaukee-Eight
engine is a sign of the innovation we have in place. We are confident our 2018
line will also help sales,” he said. “I have never been more excited about the
products in our pipeline.”
“We do not just build motorcycles, we build drivers, too. We
are focusing on the next generation of riders,” Levatich said. “We want to add
more dealers overseas and grow riders here in the United States, reaching out to
new markets including younger riders, women, African-Americans and Hispanics.”
Company plans call for adding up to 200 dealerships outside the United States by
While not giving specifics about what Harley-Davidson has
under development, Levatich said they “will change the way people view
Harley-Davidson. It will push us into new markets. We are definitely entering a
new stage of product development.” Levatich said the investments Harley-Davidson
have made in both new product development and manufacturing efficiencies will
have lasting benefits.
“We will not see overnight returns, but we are making
decisions that will attribute to long-term success,” he said. “We are adjusting
to the new normal of U.S. market performance. We will continue to deliver what
matters to riders.”
As you can see by the last quote from Matt Levatich, he said “we are
adjusting to the new normal”. HD knows that the tide is changing
and they are going to try to tap in to that market. With Polaris pulling the
plug on Victory Motorcycles, Harley-Davidson will be going head to head with a
formidable American made challenger in Indian Motorcycles that have been making
some styling changes of their own. It will be interesting to see the next 5
years and how HD attempts to appeal to the new buyer while continuing to please
their current base of long time buyers. Most expect Polaris will now put all of
their resources into Indian Motorcycles while trying to take away more market
share from HD by building their brand as well. The bottom line is, it should all
be good for the motorcycle buyer. As we have seen before, Harley-Davidson seems
to up their game when they are pushed, which makes everyone better.
